Online Safety
The SHIELD Mentor Program is pleased to offer a secure platform for electronic communication between mentors and youth in online mentoring.
For security and privacy reasons, there are some things you should never share with your mentor or mentee:- Your "real" e-mail addresses (outside of this program)
- Your postal mailing address
- Your phone number
- Aliases you may go by in any online discussion group
- You are strongly discouraged from sharing e-mails from a mentor or mentee with others, unless directed to do so by SHIELD program staff.
NEVER arrange to meet your mentor or mentee face-to-face (outside of SHIELD sponsored events) or over the phone without explicit approval and direction from the Executive Director. We are happy to make arrangements for such a visit, as possible and as appropriate, but we have to keep in mind parents' safety and approval concerns, and the appropriateness of such encounters.
Also, NEVER arrange to interact with your mentee electronically outside of this program's Web site (http://shield.imentorinteractive.org). That means do not arrange to communicate via any online discussion group or chat room on any web site not associated directly with this program.
Monitored and Filtered Communications: All communications between mentors and mentees occur internally within the online system and are subject to filters and monitored by SHIELD program staff.
