Become a Mentor

The SHIELD Mentor Program helps to empower youth in our community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. The mentoring program uses volunteer mentors to support, guide, and be a trusted friend to a young person for a period of at least one year. By becoming part of the social network of community role models and supporters who care about the youth, the mentor can help youth develop and reach positive personal goals. Application and Screening Process:  To begin, complete the application and attend orientation and training.
Submitting an application does not guarantee being matched with a Mentee.  Part of the process of being matched is actively completing orientation and training.  If an applicant is not matched, it is based on the availability of volunteer mentors in the program.

Background Checks:  SHIELD reserves the right to conduct a background check on Mentors at any time. This includes a National Criminal Check, a National Sex Offender Check and an Identification Verification.

On-going Training and Support:  SHIELD takes pride in its support and training of our volunteers. We provide comprehensive initial training as well as monthly volunteer meetings to support the mentoring relationship.   Each volunteer will attend a monthly volunteer staff meeting as well as on-going trainings, when needed or requested.
