Q: What is Leadership?
A: A simple definition of leadership is that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. Warren Bennis, a pioneer of the contemporary field of leadership studies and Founding Chairman of The Leadership Institute at the University of Southern California, provides the following definition:
“Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among peers, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential.”
Q: What is Development?
A: Development happens through daily experiences—whether planned or accidental. Youth Development work requires finding ways to engage youth in meaningful activities for leadership. The goal is to prepare them for adulthood and promote positive ways to get there.
Q: What is a good description of a person of strong leadership?
A: A person of strong leadership has good character. They will exemplify their leadership in their behavior by making ethical decisions and inspiring others.
Q: What is Leadership Development?
A: Leadership development refers to any activity that enhances the quality of leadership within an individual.

Q: What types of mentoring will be offered?
A: The following types of mentoring are offered at SHIELD:
Group mentoring: a mentor may work with up to four mentees at a time promoting positive peer pressure.
Peer mentoring: youth mentoring other youth.
Online mentoring: allows mentees 24/7 assess.
Q: How do I become a mentee?
A: You can become a mentee by doing the following:
Q: When and where do mentors meet with mentees?
A: Mentoring can take place anytime, including weekends depending on the availability and schedule between the mentor and mentee. Mentors and mentees will participate in online mentoring, allowing 24/7 accessibility. Monthly activities will be available throughout the community. In order to be part of the SHIELD Mentor Program, all potential participants must print out, read through, and keep on hand the following document:
