A: Development happens through daily experiences—whether planned or accidental. Youth Development work requires finding ways to engage youth in meaningful activities for leadership. The goal is to prepare them for adulthood and promote positive ways to get there.

A: Leadership development refers to any activity that enhances the quality of leadership within an individual.

What types of mentoring will be offered?

Mentors become equipped to build relationships with middle school
and high school youths through intensive training teaching them the challenges
their mentees face and how to make a difference in the lives of their mentees.
Mentees are matched with a community role model that they can depend on a day-to-day
basis.
The following types of mentoring are offered at
SHIELD:
- Group mentoring: placing adolescents in groups with one or more
caring adults.
- Peer mentoring: a form of mentoring between an
older more experienced youth and a new youth.
- Online mentoring: a means of providing
a guided mentoring relationship over the internet using a safe and secure
online platform which enables youth to receive greater positive influence
from more than one individual.
