Mentor Job Description

The Mentor’s Responsibility to Mentee
Every Volunteer Mentor must:
• Be able to commit to spending at least one year in a relationship with a mentee in an ongoing, one-to-one relationship
• Serve as a positive role model and friend
• Communicate with their mentee/s weekly—email—to keep in touch about what is going on in their lives
• Honor, all commitments made to the mentee and SHIELD Mentor Program
• Be respectful of the mentee’s time, opinions, and decision-making
• Serve as a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors—e.g. patience, tolerance, and reflective listening
• Be encouraging and supportive of the mentee
• Strive for mutual respect
• Build self-esteem and motivation
• Help set goals and work toward accomplishing them

Responsibility to SHIELD Mentor Program
Every Volunteer Mentor must:
• Attend monthly group mentoring sessions (every third Friday at Peeler Recreation Center from 6:30 - 8:30 PM)
Attend a volunteer staff meeting once per month
• Attend on-going trainings, when needed or requested
• Complete appropriate hour logs and forms provided
• Complete evaluation surveys, as requested
• Recognize role as a mandated reporter and report any problematic issues
• Be patient and understand the mentoring relationship is a process that takes work and time

Participant Requirements
All volunteers must:
• Be 19 years of age
• Have earned a high school diploma or GED
• Submit an application, references, a copy of a photo ID
• Pass a criminal background check
• Be willing to complete the application and screening
• Exhibit a genuine concern for middle and high school aged youth
• Participate and attend training and periodic mentor support workshops, as required
• Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures
• Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments
• Be willing to communicate regularly, submit activity information, and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities
• Have a clean criminal history
• Not use illicit drugs
• Not use alcohol or controlled substances in an inappropriate manner
• Not be currently in treatment for substance abuse and have a non-addictive period of at least five years
• Not be currently in treatment for a mental disorder or hospitalized for such in the past three years

Time Commitment:
Mentors must commit to at least one year once matched with a youth, for a minimum of 1 hour per week, to be effective with the youth.

Application and Screening Process
Online application
• Criminal history check: state, child abuse and neglect registry, sexual offender registry
• Personal interview
• Provide three personal references
• Attend two-hour mentor training
