| Mentor Job Description At SHIELD all of our volunteers are considered to be mentors in any capacity they serve in the program prior to and during the match. Every Volunteer must fulfill the following responsibilities: • Be able to commit to spending at least one year in a relationship with a Mentee in an ongoing, mentoring relationship (or three semesters if college student) • Serve as a positive role model and friend• Honor, all commitments made to the Mentee and SHIELD Mentor Program • Be respectful of the Mentee’s time, opinions, and decision-making • Serve as a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors—e.g. patience, tolerance, and reflective listening • Be encouraging and supportive of the Mentee • Strive for mutual respect • Build self-esteem and motivation • Help set goals and work toward accomplishing them
Responsibility to SHIELD Mentor Program • Attend all volunteer staff meetings • Participate and attend on-going trainings and periodic mentor support workshops, when needed or requested • Complete appropriate hour logs and forms provided • Complete evaluation surveys, as requested • Recognize role as a mandated reporter and report any problematic issues • Be patient and understand the mentoring relationship is a process that takes work and time • Adhere to all program policies and procedures • Communicate regularly, submit activity information, and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities Participant Requirements • Have earned a high school diploma or GED • Submit an application, references, a copy of a photo ID • Exhibit a genuine concern for middle and high school aged youth • Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments • Pass a criminal background check • Be willing to complete the application and screening• Have a clean criminal history • Not use illicit drugs • Not use alcohol or controlled substances in an inappropriate manner • Not be currently in treatment for substance abuse and have a non-addictive period of at least five years • Not be currently in treatment for a mental disorder or hospitalized for such in the past three years
Time Commitment Mentors
must commit to at least one year once matched with a youth, for a
minimum of 1 hour per week, to be effective with the youth.
