Our Board of Directors are dedicated to mentoring youth! Governing a new organization takes diligence, and the Board has been hard at work this year forming policy, recruiting members, and performing evaluations. This coming year promises to be an exciting year for development and growth.

It is recommended that you speak with a current Board Member regarding the time commitments, responsibilities, etc. of the board. This will help you to determine whether you would like to serve if nominated to the Board.

 

If SHIELD is your passion and you are interested in investing yourself in the governance of the organization, you should consider  filling out an application This will allow the Board of Directors to effectively and fairly evaluate all candidates for the available openings.  Applicants must include a resume and be 18 years of age or older. Board Member Job Description

• Define the mission, goals, and objectives of the Organization, and assign priorities among the goals and objectives when needed;
• Approve major personnel policies;
• Review and approve the Organization’s budget;
• Raise the financial resources required to meet the Organization’s goals and objectives, as coordinated by the Executive Director, and establish general fund raising policies; and
• Conduct a biennial review and evaluation of the Organization’s performance of the goals and objectives of highest priority.
• Actively participate in fundraising for the organization.
• Regularly attend Board meetings in accordance with the Bylaws, committee meetings, other Board functions, and special events
• Actively participate in committee activities, minimum one committee per year
• Accept assignments and complete tasks competently and punctually
• Stay informed about issues confronting the organization, including financial, political, and legal
• Prepare for meeting by reading financial statements, minutes and reports
• Build a collegial working relationship with other Board Members that contributes to consensus

• Commitment to mission of the SHIELD Mentor Program
• Willingness to accept the responsibility and commitment of Board Membership

Board Member Time Commitments

• Board Meetings— quarterly attendance. Minimum two hour meeting time. Additional preparation time required.
• Committee Meetings—monthly attendance. Minimum one hour meeting time.
• Special Events—held approximately two times per year. Time varies for each event; however, anticipate frequent committee meetings, tasks, and event participation.
• Annual Kick-Off Event—held annually. Range of one to three hours. Board is responsible for money donations, event set-up, hosting clients, and clean-up. Support is provided by volunteer staff.
• Board Officer—monthly attendance Executive Committee. Minimum one hour meeting time. Extra time required to write/review minutes, sign checks, etc.

NOTE—Additional time may be required for orientation, community activities,
lobbying, presentations, and miscellaneous events.
