The Mentor Youth! Recruitment Campaign

SHIELD launches youth recruitment campaign.

SHIELD Mentor Program, a program that gives middle and high school youth the opportunity to be matched with community role models has launched the Mentor Youth! Recruitment Campaign to encourage community participation in recruiting youth to join SHIELD.  Youth who enroll before October 15, 2008 will be given priority for acceptance into the programs.

By the end of October the goal is to have at least 48 youth enrolled in S.H.I.E.L.D., a group mentoring program.  This program offers middle and high school youth structured activities with Leadership Advisors.  Workshops are held monthly on Saturdays throughout the school year at community recreation centers. Each session is 120 minutes long.

You can help by simply telling a youth you know about our programs.  We are also seeking talented volunteers, who will spearhead the recruitment campaign as year-round advocates and spokespersons for engaging youth participation in our programs.  If you want to get involved in the Mentor Youth! Recruitment Campaign please email Precious McKoy, Founder/Executive Director, at mckoyp@shieldyouth.com or call 336-337-2771 for more information.

SHIELD 2009 Kick-Off Event
PRESS RELEASE/ MEDIA ADVISORY

August 15, 2009

Contact: Chantal Jones; csjones@shieldyouth.com

SHIELD 2009 Kick-Off Event Date: Saturday, August 22, 2009

Time: 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Place: The Peeler Recreation Center 1300 Sykes Ave Greensboro, NC 27405-6148

Greensboro, NC – On Saturday, August 22, the SHIELD Mentor Program in Greensboro will be hosting a kick-off to encourage the students in the Triad area to become more involved in their communities! With the support of family, friends, and mentors, SHIELD strives to empower the youth in our communities to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. By supporting and joining SHIELD, youths, with the support of their families, will be educated on not only how to become the influential leaders the future needs, but also how to become the leaders that effectively implement constructive changes within their schools and communities. SHIELD is launching a series of events that will take place monthly, post kick off, at different recreational centers, parks, and family friendly arenas in the Triad area. In conjunction with these events, mentors and mentees will be communicating on a regular basis, one on one, and online, establishing strong relationships with one another to help bring out those leadership characteristics that are needed to create the better future that is always talked about. We want our students to be comfortable in having an undeterred hope in their future endeavors, yet urging them to understand the obligation we all have to our communities.

“Today is the day, not yesterday or tomorrow, and when so many of our role models continue to lay the paths on which we are supposed to walk; It is up to us as a generation to take heed and create the world we’ve only dreamed of into a beautiful reality. A society where every child has a chance to be a scholar no matter who their parents were, or what community they happen to live in. A Harvard scholar once said, how this time, we listened to our hopes, instead of our fears. How this time, we decided to stop doubting and to start dreaming., and how this time, in this great country--where a girl from the South Side of Chicago can go to college and law school, and the son of a single mother from Hawaii can go all the way to the White House --that we committed ourselves, we committed ourselves to building the world as it should be, nothing less. Our hope at SHIELD is just that, and with the help of our dedicated mentors, we can provide a push in the right way so that any student can excel in each and every way they aspire.”- C. S. Jones

The event is free and open to the public. Many refreshments will be served. For additional information, including a full schedule of event times and locations, please visit our website at http://www.shieldyouth.com.

SHIELD Mentor Program Launches its Online Mentoring Services
SHIELD Mentor Program (SHIELD), a nonprofit organization providing mentoring programs for middle and high school youth in the Greater Greensboro area, announces the launch of an online mentoring for mentors and mentees to communicate effectively online at their convenience.

March 13, 2009 -- SHIELD Mentor Program (SHIELD), a nonprofit organization providing mentoring programs for middle and high school youth in the Greater Greensboro area, announces the launch of an online mentoring for mentors and mentees to communicate effectively online at their convenience.  “This opens up online mentoring to interested mentors and mentees – allowing SHIELD to support the personal goals of youth and to establish a positive, trusting relationship between online adult participants and the mentees,” said Precious McKoy, Founder/Executive Director of SHIELD.

Through this program, participants develop Mentor Profiles and Mentee Profiles, and then selection is facilitated by SHIELD through an online match process. Communications take place using email. When a "match" is established, the mentor and mentee are encouraged to use the monthly writing prompts to set and reach goals, as a guide to building a lifelong relationship and friendship that is mutually beneficial. "It is important for young people and positive role models to interact, communicate and learn from those with similar backgrounds and experiences," Antonio McKoy, Co-Founder/Development Director said.

The P's of life:Predict, Plan, and Pursue your Purpose!
A question I was asked at an early age and struggled to answer ever since was the inevitable question, "who am I?" Whether you take the time to answer this question or not, you are responding by your everyday actions. If you could get to the bottom of this question early in life you will be at the brink of success.  We are taught to find our purpose in life and to know where we fit in this whole wide world.  The greatest predictor of your life is....YOU!   Take the following steps: 1) Predict, 2) Plan, and 3) Pursue your Purpose.  Think about your strengths and weaknesses, what you enjoy the most, and what just makes you happy.  This gives you an inkling or an idea of where you fit in this world.  First define who you are, then decide how you will get to where you want to be in life. Now, expand your mind and think of others and how those qualities can help others in the world.  How can you use your abilities to make this world a better place, while accomplishing your goals? Commit to reach your ultimate goal. You have control of who you are now and who you will be.  Many people will come into our lives to help shape who we are.  Let the people around you instill the values you need.  You will require someone you consider as a role model to take you to the place you are going.

I hope that this message has been inspirational to you and will help you get connected with what we are doing here at SHIELD Mentor Program.

These words of inspiration have been brought to you by Precious McKoy, Founder/Executive Director.

Kick-off of the Greensboro CARES Mentoring Movement Circle
Call to Action to Save Our Youth National CARES Mentoring Movement Kick-off of the Greensboro CARES Mentoring Movement Circle Monday, Nov. 24 at 6:00 pm Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel.(on Bennett College Campus) Susan Taylor, founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM) and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of ESSENCE Magazine, will participate in the kick-off of the Greensboro CARES Mentoring Movement Circle on Monday, Nov. 24 at 6:00 pm in the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel. She will be joined by Thomas Dortch, Chairman of NCMM and founder of 100 Black Men of America; The Honorable Yvonne Johnson, Mayor of Greensboro; Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President of Bennett College for Women and local representatives from the national partners. The Bennett College and North Carolina A&T State University choirs will also render a community mini-concert. The event is free and open to the community. The NCMM was launched in an effort to mobilize individuals from government agencies, corporations, community advocacy groups, and faith-based organizations to save, develop, and mentor our community’s greatest resource – our young. The Greensboro CARES Circle will build on relationships between organizations that serve young people – such as schools, community and mentoring organizations – and connects them with adults who care about the condition of our young people and aren’t afraid to answer the “Call to Action to Save our Youth” as a community responsibility through the vehicle of mentoring. The NCMM’s long-term goal is to increase the high school graduation rate among Black students by 10 percent each year. The 100 Black Men of America, The Links, Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and The Twenty-First Century Foundation are among the many respected national organizations partnering with NCMM. Understanding the urgency of this call to action, Shalom Community Christian Church, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Eric Cole and Bennett College for Women, under the leadership of Dr. Julianne Malveaux, have agreed to set up and manage the Greensboro CARES Mentoring Movement Circle to link arms and aims against the social ills that imperil our young people. They have joined with so many others across the nation to answer the call to take responsibility for saving our youth. Contact: WANDA MOBLEY 336-517-2267
