SHiELD Leadership Mentoring Workshop Schedule

Time: 10AM - 12PM

Location: Windsor Recreation Center

2.4.12       Session 1: Introducing Leadership

Brief Description: This session provides an entertaining way for teens to consider their potential as leaders. 

2.18.12      Session 2: What Leadership Means to Me

Brief Description: In this session, teens explore their own definitions of leadership and gain an awareness of how differently people define leadership. 

3.3.12       Session 3: The Leaders in My Life

Brief Description: In this session, teens identify well-known individuals who exhibit overall qualities people generally look for in leaders.

3.17.12      Session 4: What I Look for in a Leader

Brief Description: In this session, teens examine what they may need to do to balance their expectations of leaders with those of others. 

4.7.12       Session 5: Leaders and Followers

Brief Description: In this session, teens explore how important it is for leaders to pay attention to who they're leading and if necessary, to adapt their leadership style.

4.21.12      Session 6: Power Play

Brief Description: In this session, teens gain an awareness of different types of power and different ways of expressing that power with positive or negative effects.

5.5.12       Session 7: Communicate with Style

Brief Description: In this session, teens learn how effective communication skills make a difference in group members hearing what leaders mean to say--and vice versa.

5.19.12      Session 8: Hear, There, Everywhere: Active Listening

Brief Description: In this session, teens learn what can block and what can improve their listening.

6.2.12       Session 9: My Values

Brief Description: In this session, teens gain an understanding of leader's responsibility to balance personal values with what's necessary for the greater good of the group.

6.16.12      Session 10: Doing the Right Thing

Brief Description: This session helps them recognize how frequently they face ethical situations and guides them in answering the question, "How do I make an ethical decision?"

7.21.12      Session 11: He Says, She Says

Brief Description: In this session, teens learn that behavior styles traditionally considered feminine or masculine are both valuable in leading and aren't automatically tied to gender.

8.4.12       Session 12: Choosing Tolerance

Brief Description: In this session, teens examine their prejudices and the impact these beliefs and other stereotypes may have on their roles as leaders.

8.18.12      Session 13: Strength in Numbers

Brief Description: This session focus on promoting an understanding of the importance of group members connecting effectively for a team to be a success.

9.1.12       Session 14: Turning Conflict into Cooperation

Brief Description: This session focuses on helping teens gain awareness of their style of dealing with disagreements as well as other people's styles.

9.15.12      Session 15: All in Favor, Say "Aye"

Brief Description: Majority rule is one approach.  Teens learn in this session about its benefits and limitations.

10.6.12      Session 16: All for One and One for All

Brief Description: Consensus rule is one effective approach.  Teens learn in this session about its benefits and limitations.

10.20.12     Session 17: Taking Chances

Brief Description: In this session, teens explore what risks are appropriate to take on behalf of a group, as well as how and when to inspire others to take risks.

11.3.12      Session 18: Thinking Creatively

Brief Description: In this session, teens explore the value of creative problem solving.

11.17.12     Session 19: Having My Voice Heard

Brief Description: In this session, teens have a light-hearted opportunity to practice speaking skills and responding to unexpected questions in front of others.

12.1.12      Session 20: Motivating the Team

Brief Description: This session, teens gain an appreciation for how leaders need to balance what motivates individuals and what motivates the team. 

12.15.12     Session 21: Showing Appreciation, Celebrating Success

Brief Description: Helping teens understand the importance of showing appreciation to others and celebrating team success is a significant part of their daily behavior.

Lesson Structure:



Icebreaker (15 -30 minutes): The icebreaker is brief activity or game that energizes everyone. This activity is usually a short interactive exercise that incorporates the lesson topic for that day.


Group Discussion (45 minutes):  The group discussion will be facilitated around topics of leadership development through sharing of life experiences, panel discussions, guided discussions, interactive exercises, handouts and role plays


Wrap-Up (15 - 30 minutes): Following the group mentoring activity everyone participates in a group discussion recapping the activity and how it benefited them. Each session ends with positive reinforcement from the mentors and group facilitator.


Free Time (remainder of time)There will be opportunities for mentors and mentees to meet and greet one another at the end of each group mentoring session.  They will also have an opportunity to play games and connect in a fun environment.
